North Lake Student Recognized for Leadership

Maryam Marhaba leads on campus and in her community

IRVING, Texas- North Lake College student Maryam Marhaba is one of seven students district-wide to be named a 2014 Amidon-Beauchamp Student Leader of the Year by the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD). Known for her academic excellence, involvement on campus, and overall achievements, Marhaba was recently recognized at an awards ceremony at the DoubleTree Hotel in Richardson.
Maryam Marhaba is the President of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) at North Lake College. A student organization that was once diminishing in numbers, the MSA has seen renewed growth and participation since Marhaba took over establishing a club constitution and new student events. In fact, the MSA’s first annual Celebrate Eid party was so successful, the club ran out of food after hundreds of students showed up. Henna art, jewelry, traditional clothing, and games also kept attendees entertained.
“Being President of the MSA has taught me to effectively manage things, and how to deal with different types of people,” explains Marhaba. “The experience that I gained from this leadership position helped boost my confidence, improve my humility, and develop my organizational skills. In my future career, academic and real-world, this experience is foundational.”
In addition to leading on campus, Marhaba leads in her community. When she is not studying or working at one of her two jobs, she enjoys spending her free time cleaning up local parks and promoting green living. Marhaba also volunteers as tutor, helping children ages 7-10 with subjects like English and Science.
In December 2013 Marhaba completed an Associate of Arts at North Lake College. This summer, she will complete an Associate of Science with a field of study in Business. She is currently attending the University of Texas at Dallas and pursuing a Bachelor of IT Management. She hopes to one day achieve a Master of Health Management and work in hospital administration.
